Helene set a surge record β without a local landfall
Helene came ashore in the Big Bend, well to the north, yet pushed six to seven feet of storm surge into the Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg area in September 2024 β more than two feet higher than Hurricane Elena in 1985 or Idalia in 2023, and a record for the location. Shore Acres and the barrier-island beaches flooded, and hundreds of water rescues followed. The lesson is the one Pinellas keeps learning: a storm does not have to hit here to flood here, and homeowners insurance never covers flood.
